Stay Safe Around Downed Power Lines

Downed power lines are extremely dangerous and can cause severe injury or even death. Always assume a downed line is live and stay at least 35 feet away.

If you encounter a downed power line:

  • Do not touch the line or anything in contact with it.
  • Stay back at least 35 feet.
  • Move away safely by shuffling with small steps, keeping your feet together and on the ground to reduce the risk of electric shock.

If a power line falls on your vehicle:

  • Stay inside the vehicle and call for help.
  • Warn others to stay away from the vehicle.
  • If you must exit, jump clear of the car without touching it and the ground at the same time. Then shuffle at least 35 feet away with your feet together.
