DIY Home Energy Audit – Tips to Save Energy & Money
Wondering how to lower your energy usage and save money on your utility bill? Here are some common things to look for in your home or business:
Insulation
Proper insulation keeps your home comfortable and energy efficient. You could have heat loss through the attic, floor, and walls if R-value levels are less than the recommended minimum. Check your local codes for insulation R-values. Measure insulation depth or use an online calculator to estimate R-value.
Air Leaks
Use your hand, a smoke tool, or incense stick to test for drafts around windows, doors, outlets, and in areas where two different building materials meet. Seal leaks with the appropriate caulk or weather-stripping material. Check ductwork and seal any gaps with professional-grade tape.
HVAC Systems
Heating and cooling use the most energy. Replace filters regularly and schedule annual maintenance. Consider upgrading systems that are over 15 years old with more energy-efficient equipment.
Water Heaters
Set your thermostat to 120°F or less, per RCW 19.27A.060. This is for safety and helps with energy savings. Check the elements too. A constantly running unit may have a faulty element(s), wasting energy.
Lighting
Switch to LED bulbs. Use dimmers or timers to save energy too.
Manufactured Homes
Check under the home for damage to insulation or pipes. Critters like to get underneath in the winter to stay warm. They may damage insulation and cause air leaks.
Electronics and appliances
Unplug when not in use. Switch to more efficient models.
